What a year it has been,
Whilst some will say it was not without it’s challenges, set backs and the tragic passing of some absolute favourite entertainers it’s definitely been anything but pedestrian. This year began with a celebration for THM and the opening of the first of what we hope to be many THM Wellness Centres, the culmination of a few years of hard work and persistence made much easier by the support of Bendigo and Central Victoria. In what seemed like a whirlwind we were able to set up and launch something new to Central Victoria, a combination of Allied Health partnerships with Physiotherapy Centre Bendigo and J’aime Barry Osteopath and a fully operational Gym and Elite Sports facility. Looking back now, I sometimes wonder how on Earth we got it over the line with all the works that had to be done to make it happen.
It was quite a learning curve from a business perspective – going from a small studio space in the Bendigo CBD to a considerably larger facility in Epsom, having to hire more staff which was a new experience for me as THM was operated for so long by only myself. Lady luck was definitely smiling down on THM the day our PT Manager Avril walked through the doors and asked to work for me, it’s definitely been a huge plus having someone who’s equally as motivated there to share the driving of this business which has grown from strength to strength since it opened only 4 years ago. That good fortune definitely continued with the findings of Todd and Jack who were new to the game of Coaching, but were two people who only needed an opportunity to help them succeed – and they have done that with ease. Then our amazing reception staff of Grace, Amy, Suzanne and Jasmin and new Coaches Kat, Peter and Isabelle rounded out a truly awesome THM team by the end of the year.
The launch of Central Victoria’s only Elite Sports program open to the public – THM Academy – saw the arrival international Volleyball teams from Australia, Cuba, Colombia and Croatia who came to train at our facility and entertain Bendigo in competition. 2016 also brought about a partnership with the Bendigo Spirit and my appointment as their Strength & Conditioning Coach and it has been such an honour to work with these amazing athletes this year. 2017 will bring the full growth of this Academy Program and I cannot wait to see what dizzy heights our resident ‘mad scientist’ Todd Jarratt takes it to in the next 12 months and beyond. With our Academy program and Elite Sports focus we were honoured to also partner with students from Latrobe University Exercise Science, providing them with a 12 week practical emersion into the life of full time coaching. We are definitely looking forward to seeing students again in 2017 and helping a new batch solidify all their knowledge into a practical setting.
Once again the early morning airwaves were taken over each Wednesday fortnight by the ever entertaining Fiona Parker and myself on ABC Central Victoria. It was a fantastic year of hot topics, great banter and contact with the wider Central Victorian community helping spread the word about health and fitness. Bendigo Magazine was kind enough to invite me to author articles on health and fitness for their new publication, the first was a greatly received by our mum readers and I know the newest one will definitely spark the interest of our female fitness junkies!
As always, we’ve had great support from our long term business partners in Red Raven Studio, Brazilian Beauty Bendigo, Poyser Motor Group, Deluxe Hamper Company, Mr. Beebe’s, Eternal Vase, Rebel Sport Bendigo, Southern Cross Austereo, RSD Chartered Accountants and Rocks on Rosalind. The Epsom site would not have arrived on time had it not been for the tireless work of Dave Hall and his team at Paul Gray Builders, the support of our landlords at Hume and Iser, CBA Building Designers, Building Issues Surveyors, the Bendigo Council and of course NC Fitness Australia for getting all our gear here on time! It’s been fantastic to make some new connections this year as well with The Bendigo Cleaning Company, Lorna Jane Bendigo, Cherish Thy, Bendigo Toyota, Percy & Percy, Bendigo Wholefoods,Bendigo Magazine, Volleyball Australia and Latrobe University.
Partnerships in the fitness industry in Bendigo are unfortunately few and far between in my opinion, too many businesses simply refuse to work with others and I hope this changes in the new year and beyond. We’ve always been lucky to have great friends at Shape Health and Fitness, 3T Fitness and Crossfit By Design but this year we have been able to make that network a little larger with Mass Nutrition Bendigo, Snap Fitness Bendigo and Crossfit Ironstar. It’s been truly fantastic to reconnect with some and make new connections with these businesses this year.
With the support we have received from Bendigo for both our locations, we have been able to help change the lives of our community on a greater scale and effect positive change in our community through our charity works and sports programs. Lastly but most importantly I would like to thank all the people who call THM home, all our gym members at Epsom, our PT Clients and Group PT clients and our Athletes who trust our Coaching staff to help improve their health and wellness. It’s an honour and a privilege to be able to look after someone’s health, and the Coaches and I a grateful each and every day because we get to wake up and do something we love. We could not do what we love without this support and encouragement from everyone I’ve mentioned, so as 2016 has just ticked over into 2017 I would like to extend a huge thank you on behalf of my own family and our THM family to everyone who has helped us this year and every year, and wish you all a safe and prosperous 2017.
Be safe and let the New Year bring excitement, success and happiness to you all.
